Compilations - Early Cassette Compilations

When MT started in December of 1984, the cassette scene was in full swing. CDs had just been invented, but were not really commercially available. Recordable CD-Rs, MP3s, DVDs, recordable DVDs, this was all just someone's dream. Even vinyl was to remain out of reach for most bands. It was an exciting time, when the punk and industrial scene was in full swing, when integrity and not selling out still meant something, and when anything disguised as a major label was looked down upon and not up to. Twenty years on, and we see how much things have changed. It was in this environment, in the midst of the early San Francisco punk scene, that MT was born. Originally formed as an outlet for the experimental recordings of Doc Wör Mirran, the idea quickly cristalized that music from other artists and even other musical styles could also be released. The easiest way of course was the compilation cassette. Fueled by early issues of MRR and our own collection of practice room recorded, cassette only releases, MT's humble beginnings began here, with the lowly cassette compilation (all releases guaranteed Blake-free!).

Godfodder was the third and last MT release to come out while we were still based in San Francisco. All other releases, starting from MT-004 came out after our move to Germany in 1985. This one was a co-release with Warpt Records, a label based both in Washington D.C. as well as Santa Cruz, California, and ran by the band Asbestos Rockpyle. It was easy: while visiting Santa Cruz, a master cassette was put together together with Anatol Sucher of Asbestos Rockpyle, each label supplying bands that they knew. A cover was quickly put together and even the first copies made. Each label then went their seperate ways, each with a master copy of the tape and cover, and copied the tape as often as they needed. As with Numb Tongue No Taste, a few of the bands on this release went on to become very well known. Eighty minute tape.

This was our fourth release and the first to come out after our move to Germany. It is also much more hardcore punk oriented that either of the first two samplers, and featured exclusively punk music from Poland. Remember, this being the year 1985, and the iron curtain was still firmly in place. Compiled by Elizabeth Chodorowska, who used to be the main contact person in the punk scene within Poland. 27 bands on this sixty minute tape. Oh yeah, not many people know this, but this is the first time that the label name "Musical Tragedies" (here with "Records" added) appears. Thought up by Jeannette Gustavus, who later formed Stickman Records, this label name was originally intended for her releases on MT. After a few tapes, the label name was dropped, only to be resurected years later as a full fledged MT label.

Here it is, the tape that began it all. Having absolutely no idea what we were doing, over the course of 1984 bands were contacted, recorded live, demos collected, until enough tracks were on hand to put out a sixty minute long cassette. A master tape was produced at the San Francisco State University Electronic Music Room using, of all things, a quarter inch reel to reel machine, as no one we knew had a double cassette deck. Volker Stewart put in the cash needed to have 200 copies professionaly copied, the covers were printed at the San Francisco State University student press, and off we went. Systematic, one of the early big US distros, even sold about a hundred copies (boy, how times have changed!). A sixty minute tape, it features 13 of some of the better punk and post punk bands from the mid 1980s, a few of which you might even have heard of! Comes with a nice thick booklet.

This mammoth project was MT's friendly answer to two other label's releases. First off, Florian, later half owner of MT, on his early cassette label "Noir", put out a double tape sampler of German bands that he claimed had the most bands of any sampler. Second, Anatol of Warpt put out a nice sampler that he called "Son Of Godfodder", so we thought we would put out our own sequal to the Godfodder tape. The result is Godsmell, a double 90 minute, red plastic tape set featuring no less than 87 bands! And like Godfodder, all come from the USA. Both tapes come packed in a video box, complete with insert and contact address for all bands.
